What is Liturgical Art?
| |
Broadly speaking, it is visual art that enhances worship. It includes banners, stoles, and other paraments, but it could also be painted murals, outdoor sculptures, or mixed media. More important than the medium is the intent: visual art complements the highly verbal focus of our worship and appeals to another way of knowing and experiencing. Liturgical artists hope to provide another way to encounter the holy and the mysterious.
The Liturgical Arts Team endeavors to create art that engages the viewer. Good liturgical art re-invigorates old symbols, such as the cross, or the fish, while discovering new ones. It conveys multiple meanings and allows for mystery and for individual interpretation. It is not a billboard or a commercial. Ultimately, good liturgical art may move beyond the decorative to become a prophetic voice, a challenging and enlightening way to experience God.
Each of us is made in the image of God, God the Creator. By being creative we are using the gifts God gave us to return praise and honor to God. The Liturgical Arts Team (L’Art) invites anyone who is interested in participating to join us. We hope to learn together about the elements of art and the principles of design, to try new things, and to learn about how we can use art to speak to our congregation’s needs in worship. |
